Marialona's story

Marialona Freidman was born in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, in 1938.
to Gyula and Sarah Freidman.
She lived with her parents and grandparents, she never had brothers or sisters.

Hungary was conquered by the nazis as many other countries all over Europe.
In 1942 the german army took men to the war against the russians, many men had been taken to the war against their will, Marialona's father was 32 years old when he went to that war. Although he kept in touch with his family by writing letters.
the German army was defeated and it had to retreat, they had passed through the freezing water of the russian "Don" river. There many of the soldeirs froze to death, and her father was one of them. Most of the families had been left with no father.

Until 1943 Marialona and her familiy still lived in the same neighborhood and same appartment. After 1943 the neighborhood became a ghetto and they were forced to move to another appartment and share it with other people.

The situation in Budapest wasn't as terrible as it was in other places over Europe.
The economic situation in Budapest, and in the families as well, became worse than before.There were bomb attacts and they had to go to the bunkers very often , sometimes several times at night. Once it even dameged part of their house.
Although that situation, they weren't as miserable as other jewish in the rest of Europe and Hungary in particular.
The rules for the jewish weren't so hard and extreme. Marialona who was a young girl wasn't aware of the size of what was going on.

In 1945 when the war was alredy behind, their life began to settle again and so the life in Budapest. They could go out on trips in nature, at the hills, and finally sleep quietly after the long war. In addition, right after the war had ended Marialona had started school, grade 1.

In 1948 her mother got married again, when she knew that her housband will never come back, to a man named Beyle Naiman who lost her wife and doughter in the camps.

Budapest
Budapest is in fact a young city under its present name. By 1872 the three autonomous towns of Obuda (literally, Old Buda), Buda and Pest had already grown into one, and in that year were united administration as well. The capital stands on the site of one of the oldest settlements in Europe. The archaeological finds at Castle Hill include the tools and worked pieces of a pebble industry dating from 46000 to 42000 BC.

At the end of the 19th century

Within a few decades the capital was, it seemed, making up for the long centuries it had spent behind the rest of Europe. However, this rapid progress was founded on fragile foundations. The capital could not rely on a broadly modernizing Hungarian urban network and had to join the main trend of European urban development on its town. In 1910 it was a big city of 1 million inhabitants, while the population of the second and third largest country towns (Szeged and Szabadka) was only just over 100,000, both of them traditional agricultural market towns.

Between the two World Wars

The First World War and its consequences are well known. The Austro- Hungarian monarchy was broken up. Budapest became the oversized capital of a small country, which could not regain its earlier international role in a hostile Carpathian Basin that had been cut into pieces. Its population continued to grow at a moderate pace, but it now resembled the urban growth of the developing countries, nurtured more by crisis in the countryside than by the internal energy of the city. By the 1930s Budapest was beginning to overcome the consequences of World War I, when the next world war overwhelmed it, causing enormous damage to its buildings, as well as to its population.

From the Second World War to now
Under socialism, it has maintained a steady rate of development. With the dissolution of socialism in 1989, the city has entered the post-industrial age with the leading role of blue-collar industry being replaced by services and a white-collar workforce. And now Budapest is again searching for its place among the major European metropolises. Budapest is once again becoming a Central European capital.
